New York City Plans To License Home Furnishings Retailers - $20,000 Bond To Post

According to Jeff Katz President of Fulton Stores, Brooklyn, NY the Committe on Consumer Affairs for the City of New York has re-introduced legislation that would regulate furniture retailers in New York City. Mr. Katz, who is also on the Board of the Greater New York Home Furnishings Association indicated that the purpose of the law as stated by members of the City Council is to "regulate and strengthen the Department's ability to obtain redress for consumer victimized by defective and damaged merchandise, the late delivery or non-deliver of goods, and the failure of those who sell these items to refund deposits." Among other provisions, the legislation would require retailers to post a $20,000 bond which would be placed in a general fund to be used at the discretion of the Department of Consumer Affairs to compensate consumers under certain circumstances.
