First William Richman Scholarship Goes To Courtney Newnam

Courtney M. Newnam was the first recipient of the William S. Richman Scholarship to the International School of Home Furnishings at High Point University. Newnam is a rising junior and a native of High Point, North Carolina. She has worked part time in furniture retailing and has a 3.6 grade average. The William Richman memorial scholarship was established by his wife, Marilyn "Toddy" Richman and children Daniel A. Richman, Elizabeth Richman Besser and Ruth Richman Kornbluh to encourage outstanding young people to pursue careers in home furnishings and to develop quality leadership for the industry. Richman was President of Stratford Company and the upholstery division of Mohasco Company. A Harvard Business School graduate, he brought intellect, business and leadership skills to his company and to the industry associations he supported. A founder of UFAC, the Upholstered Furniture Action Council, Bill became Cochairman in 1979 and served for almost two decades.
