CDS Solutions Group, creators of Retail 6, a premier retail management system for the home furnishings industry, recently sponsored a lemonade stand with the students of Lancaster-based dance troupe, Encore Dance Center, raising over $8,500 for pediatric cancer research. The fund raising was in conjunction with the international campaign known as Alex’s Lemonade Stand (www.alexslemonade.com).
Alexandra “Alex” Scott was the 8-year old founder of Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Cancer Research. Alex, was diagnosed at the age of one with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. At the age of four, she decided to do something to make a cure more likely. She opened her first lemonade stand in July of 2000 with the idea of donating the proceeds to “her hospital.” Each year since, Alex held an annual lemonade stand in her front yard. As word spread, donations poured in from around the world, and Alex raised over $1.6 million for pediatric cancer. Alex lost her battle with cancer in 2004, but her mission continues with a goal for 2005 of $5 million for pediatric cancer research. Alex’s Lemonade Stands are being sponsored by children, families, schools, businesses and organizations all over the country to help her meet this goal.
Ren Baker, CEO of CDS, who has two daughters in the dance troupe, thought it would be a great project for his daughters and their fellow dancers. CDS Solutions Group donated the lemonade, assisted in the coordination and promotion of the stand, and for every donation of $5 or more, CDS donated an additional $5. Over $4,000 was raised by the stand, which was matched by CDS Solutions Group, bringing the total to $8,552.92. All proceeds were forwarded to Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer.
“Any activity that helps fight childhood diseases is worthwhile,” reports Baker. “The best part of this project is that the kids really have an opportunity to raise awareness and money to make sure the spirit and drive of Alex is kept alive. We’re working hard to meet the $5 million goal that Alex herself set and to honor the courage and tenacity with which she fought her disease.”
