The biggest star in the Magnussen Home showroom at the International Home Furnishings Market, Oct. 17 through 22 is a dark-haired Algerian beauty who will be bringing her own security guards. She’ll come dressed in a soft palette of blues, pinks and golds. And, she’s more than 120 years old! Young Algerian Girl, an original painting by Pierre-August Renoir, normally resides in the Chippendale Room at Biltmore Estate. In an unprecedented move, Magnussen Home will display the priceless artwork and several other Biltmore House treasures to celebrate the launch of the Château Collection from Biltmore Estate For Your Home by Magnussen Home. “We are delighted beyond belief that we will have an authentic Renoir in our showroom,” says Jeff Cook, Magnussen Home president and chief executive officer. “This is an amazing opportunity to share a wonderful display of priceless antiques with our customers. I know that they will be as excited as we are.” Young Algerian Girl is one of 30 paintings that the French Impressionist artist produced during two trips to the French North African colony of Algeria in 1881 and 1882. George Vanderbilt purchased the painting for his home, Biltmore Estate, in 1892. Other Biltmore Estate treasures on display in the Magnussen Home showroom lobby include: -From the Third Floor Living Hall — a pair of vases, cobalt cut glass with pendants, Bohemia, circa 1880s; and an oil lamp, blue and white glazed earthenware, probably China, 19th century. -From the Library — an Italian Baroque upholstered side chair, walnut and silk damask, circa 1895; and the book, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide; (London: A. Hepplewhite & Co. Cabinet-Makers, reprinted by B.T. Batsford, 1897, from 1794 third edition). - From the Observatory — a desk set, brass with candleholders, circa 1900; a pen tray, green marble with gilded feet, circa 1900; and a dip pen, sterling silver, Tiffany and Co., circa 1900. - From the Billiard Room — a trestle table with two drawers, Baroque style, walnut, circa 1900. - From the Archives — a letter by George Vanderbilt to Charles McNamee, dated October 7, 1895. Biltmore Estate is also sending a special security team to guard the painting and other artifacts around the clock. “These are priceless treasures that are bound to attract a lot of attention,” Cook says. “We’re looking forward to bringing some of the Biltmore Estate here and sharing their incredible beauty and craftsmanship with our market visitors.” Magnussen Home Furnishings, Inc. designs, imports, and distributes medium- and upper-medium-priced occasional tables, accent furniture and case goods across all style categories for retailers around the world.
