"Harmony and discord" describe the point and counterpoint of Summer 2005, as illustrated in the latest edition of the PANTONE View Colour Planner from Pantone, Inc., the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries for 40 years.
According to Pantone, with life in flux and uncertainty dominating, there is no middle ground in today's world - only polarization - and that applies to color as well. On one side are soft hues, muted but not dull, conveying a quite feeling. On the other side are hard colors, loud and playful and high-profile. It's mute versus loud, hidden versus obvious.
Exemplifying the softer side of Summer 2005 is "Raw Whites," a timeless palette layering different shades and finishes of white, and "Solid Blues," capturing the plasmic colors of sea and sky.
Technorganic "Mineral Vegetal" contrasts polished and raw, primitive and high-tech, while "Muted Mid-tones" draws on understated shades like Sage, Sand and Hay. The warm neutrals of "Oranges + Pinks" are playful, frivolous and naïve.
Energetic yet sophisticated, "Absolute Brights" illustrates summer's bolder approach with shameless colors like Flame, Brilliant Blue and Jelly Bean, and sixties' free spirit gets a second wind in "Upbeat Tones" like Lemon, Ribbon Red and Apple Green.
"Metallic Glamour" features rich, shimmering, techno-baroque hues, while "The Darks" draws on dusky twilight shadows and the intense nocturnal hues the likes of Caviar, Mood Indigo and Grape Wine.
"This season brings some changes to the format of the PANTONE View Colour Planner," added Schulman. "We are now using more photography and less editorial to describe the color trends. The publication is now more of a color workbook that will serve to inspire designers from all industries."
The PANTONE View Colour Planner is based on the PANTONE for fashion and home color system, the most widely used and recognized color standard in the world. It is produced by a team of leading visionaries from all over the world with expertise in different disciplines, providing a comprehensive color forecasting service for multiple design areas, including men's and women's apparel, beauty, interior and industrial design. Within each of the season's most directional color palettes, a general introduction outlines the colors included and the philosophy behind them. In addition, a specific breakdown of each palette covers harmonies, suggested color combinations, and suitable patterns and fabrics according to end use.
