Consumer research conducted on behalf of DuPont by an independent source reveals that 81 percent of U.S. consumers are concerned about fire safety in their homes and are willing to spend money on fire-resistant products that protect their families.
Additionally, one-third of the respondents say they would prefer mattresses that exceed legislative standards for fire safety.
DuPont, which has developed DuPont Fire Resistant Material to help the mattress industry comply with the January 2005 California mattress standard TB603, conducted the research to learn more about what motivates the ultimate consumers of sleep products.
“The DuPont name represents safety and innovation,” said John Dottore, corporate accounts manager – Fire Resistant Material, DuPont Advanced Fiber Systems. “Developing fire resistant mattress barriers is a natural step in the evolution of the company’s commitment to help improve the safety of people everywhere.” Study respondents also demonstrated that the DuPont brand would add value to a fire-resistant product. “The DuPont name tells consumers that they are purchasing premium products that have been researched and tested to provide a high level of quality. This will help differentiate fire resistant mattresses made by manufacturers who license the DuPont brand.”
DuPont Fire Resistant Material is a blend of DuPont‘ Kevlarx fiber and other proprietary fibers in various styles and weights and is designed for use in a variety of mattress constructions. The company participated in more than 500 burn tests in developing its first generation of Fire Resistant Material. DuPont FR Material is produced using ISO systems and standards as the basis for product quality and consistency. Standard operating procedures for the material include regular product inspections, production facility audits, certificates of analysis sent with each roll, and tracing of ingredients and rolls.
Mattress System Solutions:
The DuPont product development team designs mattress system solution materials that incorporate fire resistance while still allowing manufacturers to provide consumers with the comfort, durability and aesthetics they demand. DuPont offers a line of Fire Resistant Material products that can be incorporated in panels, gussets and borders to provide consistent performance in a mattress. These products are made with an inherently fire resistant material and are not treated with chemicals or other topical treatments.
According to Dottore, DuPont has leveraged its core competencies of science and safety to develop its Fire Resistant Material offering. “DuPont has a world-class safety record and has been providing fire safety solutions for years. DuPont fibers are critical components in firefighter and electrical workers’ uniforms, aircraft upholstery, and even racecar drivers’ suits. In addition, we supply non-ozone-depleting fire extinguishants and firefighting foam. DuPont Fire Resistant Material extends our legacy of fire safety solutions to consumers, helping to give them an improved margin of safety that workers have depended on for years from DuPont.”
