Venerable mattress and bedding accessory retailer 1-800-Mattress said today it was officially changing is name to 1800mattress.com to reflect the growing impact of its internet business as a contributor to overall sales. “During our 30 years in business, we have seen a tremendous shift from bricks to clicks,” said 1800mattress.com Founder and Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Barragan. “Along the way, we grew from Dial-A-Mattress with different area codes to 1-800-Mattress with the advent of 800 numbers. Today, the internet is the fasting growing segment of our business, and I suspect that trajectory will continue into the future –until the next retail trend is identified.” Barragan said the reason for changing the corporate moniker was to make it easier for consumers to see how to shop the retailer in a manner that was more convenient for them. Over the past few years, other notable retailers have taken similar steps to change their name to reflect their multi-channel approach marketing. In 1975, Barragan had the opportunity to takeover a small furniture shop on Jamaica Avenue in Queens. One day while riding on the subway, Barragan noticed a classified advertisement for “Dial-a-Steak.” He thought selling his products, in particular beds, by phone, combined with fast delivery and absolute guarantees, would increase sales. Barragan took out a similar classified advertisement offering mattresses and its success convinced him that he was on the right track. He outfitted his basement apartment with two phone lines, and Dial-a-Mattress (now called 1800mattress.com) was born. Founded in 1976, 1-800mattress.com is the nation’s leading bedding tele-retailer. It enables consumers to purchase a vast array of mattresses, box springs and bedding accessories by phone and the Internet 24/7, or through its 104 retail stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland and California. It features products by Sealy, Serta, Simmons, King Koil, Hypnos, Garme and Tempurpedic in its 30 beds menu styles, including odd sizes, futons and electric beds. The company’s business-to-business division also sells bedding to hotels, hospitals, colleges and other institutions.
