New York City Council Considers Furniture Store Licensing

According to the Greater New York Home Furnishings Association, the New York City Council is considering a new law to "amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to licensing and regulating furniture retail stores." Barbara Goldstein, GNYHFA Executive Director, who reviewed the legislation noted that, "although we realize that the legislation was crafted with the best of intentions, it ignores some important realities of the present day furniture business. Our initial reading indicates that it excludes big players at retail such as the NYC department stores, internet and catalog furniture retailers. It fails to recognize that a huge majority of furniture items are being imported from Asia and are subject to delays that are well beyond the control of local furniture stores. Frankly, there are many different kinds of furniture retailers in this City, who sell at different price points and levels of service and customization. This legislation will impact them in different ways. We look forward to discussing these issues with the Council."
