The National Home Furnishings Industry group for City of Hope has announced that Jim Harwell, owner of Harwell Distributing Inc., will be the recipient of its 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Each year, at a special ceremony during its annual West Coast Golf & Tennis Tournament, the group presents the Lifetime Achievement Award to individuals who exemplify lifelong dedication to the home furnishings industry and to humanitarian causes.
Harwell is a veteran in the furniture industry with 40 years experience in direct sales, warehouse operations and pool distribution. With annual sales in excess of $20 million, his company’s success is built on family values, as several family members work directly for Harwell Distributing Inc.
In addition to being a successful professional, Harwell is also a noted philanthropist. He has been active in the City of Hope Home Furnishings Industry group for more than a decade. As a prostate cancer survivor, Harwell has served as roundtable discussion leader for a community based Prostate Cancer Forum, and he provides private counsel for others who have been diagnosed with the disease. Harwell and his family are also devoted advocates of several charitable causes that benefit children.
“We all have great admiration for Jim. His generosity to those in need is astounding and his courage in his own fight with cancer is truly inspiring,” said Sharon White-Kuo, senior director of Development, City of Hope. “He has a deep understanding of City of Hope’s mission to find cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, and we feel very fortunate to have him as an honoree.”
The 12th Annual West Coast Golf & Tennis tournament takes place on Monday, June 23, 2003, at the Coto de Caza Country Club in Coto de Caza, CA. The event includes a silent auction, a cocktail reception, dinner and an awards ceremony. Since its inception, the tournament has raised in excess of $1.7 million for City of Hope Cancer Center. Last year, more than 420 attendees and generous sponsors helped to raise $370,000.
All furniture executives are invited to attend. For more information about the West Coast Golf & Tennis Tournament, including sponsorship opportunities, contact Sharon White-Kuo at 800-272-2310 or swhite-kuo@coh.org.
