Sleep Country USA announced that they have donated 4,231 pairs of shoes to foster organizations throughout the region for the foster children they assist.
For many area foster children, being removed from their home means leaving with only the clothes on their back, and the shoes on their feet. As they grow, replacing these items can be difficult and expensive for their foster families, leading to children wearing jackets that are too big and shoes that are too small.
“Many of the children in our programs have never had the opportunity to own a new pair of shoes,” said Tamara Boyd, Recruiter, Foster Family Care Network. “Getting to select a pair of shoes that fit and are comfortable is incredibly exciting for these children and for their foster parents, who have generously taken them into their homes. It’s wonderful to have such widespread community aid and encouragement.”
Sleep Country USA, the Northwest’s largest seller of premium mattresses, added its Foster Kids Shoe Drive in 2006 in response to the need for new shoes vocalized by its foster organization partners. “Shoes are one of the more expensive purchases a foster family has to make and as a result it is often the last item a foster child will get,” said Jennie Brusco, Office Manager, Community and Family Services Foundation. “Yet having supportive shoes is integral to proper growth and confident participation in beneficial activities like playing sports.”
“The Shoe Drive is one of our most important drives,” said Terry Horsley, Vice President of Brand Strategy, Sleep Country USA. “The thought of a child wearing shoes with holes on a rainy day is chilling, and thanks to our generous community, a reality we strive to change. I am heartened by the response to this drive and excited to continue to see the wonderful impact that the success of the Foster Program has on foster children in our area.”
One of the company’s six annual drives, Sleep Country also collects other important material items such as clothing, coats, school supplies, and gifts during the holidays. Currently, Sleep Country is promoting its upcoming Pajama Bowl for Foster Kids, inviting the community to have fun bowling in their pajamas, while raising money for local foster organizations.
