Sleepy's Promotion Directed at Older Sleep Deprived Americans

Americans are working more and sleeping less— such is the claim in an article published on EightStraight.com titled Sleep Through the Ages, which addresses the increasing difficulty for Americans to fit a full night’s sleep into their busy schedules. Working long hours, family, and everyday stress fueled even more by the weakening economy keep adults severely under-rested, often replacing quality sleep with caffeine to function during the day. Other sleep robbers such as earlier sleep cycles, fragmented sleep, and insomnia caused by medications or other health issues are more common with age. In support of this age group, Sleepy’s, The Mattress Professionals, a family owned specialty retail mattress company, will be offering its 50-and-older customers with an additional 10 percent off sale prices during their Columbus Day holiday mattress sale. Another article notes several factors that contribute to poor sleep at night for those over 50. Some causes are purely biological: For example, as we age, our brains produce less of the hormone melatonin, which regulates nightly sleep and daily alertness. Medications taken by older adults and chronic health conditions such as prostate and menopause were also cited as causes of sleep problems that plague the 50-and-over crowd. As staunch advocates of healthy, naturally derived sleep free of sleep meds or time-consuming remedies, Sleepy’s wants to promote the message to seniors that their sleep problems don’t have to be accepted as a natural part of aging, but may be alleviated with simple life changes like better back support matching their sleep profile. Over the Columbus holiday, Sleepy’s offered older adults 50-and-over a 10 percent discount on top of already discounted sale merchandise. This offer was available at all Sleepy’s showrooms in the North East. In addition, Sleepy’s offered a credit option that helped consumers to sleep on a Tempur-pedic mattress for less than $1 a day. Ronald Kramer, MD, a neurologist and medical director at the Colorado Neurological Institute’s Sleep Disorders Center says in a recent article “You may have to accept some normal changes in your sleep patterns to feel better, but you should never accept not feeling good day in and day out” (Health.com, August 2008). Sleepy’s hopes to drive this message home to sleep-deprived adults 50-and-over with this holiday incentive.
