Mayor Cory A. Booker and Shifman Mattress Company CEO Michael Hammer cut the ribbon this morning to open a 24,000-square foot expansion of the company’s bedding factory at One Mott Street, which increases its factory space to 84,000 square feet in a state-of-the-art facility.
Shifman Mattress Company, a high-end bedding company, has operated in Newark for 115 years, and this expansion of its factory to 84,000 square feet also includes a state-of-the-art warehouse, offices, and showrooms.
“Shifman Mattress has a long history as one of Newark’s most powerful economic engines, manifesting its faith in and commitment to our City during the past 115 years,” Mayor Booker said. “Now, as Newark transforms itself, and becomes the nation’s leading city in creating economic prosperity, Shifman Mattress has expanded its commitment to Newark, and is continuing to provide Newark residents with job and career opportunities.”
“This expansion represents a renewed commitment to the marketplace as well as to the city of Newark, which has been our home since 1893,” said Michael Hammer, owner and CEO of Shifman Mattress Company. “Thanks to a loyal and expanding base of dealers and their customers, we are celebrating our 115th year in business. I only wish that the company’s founders, the Shifman brothers, could see how we have grown year after year while carefully preserving their tradition of manufacturing by hand.”
Shifman sells its handcrafted mattresses and boxsprings through a select network of fine furniture and upscale department stores. “We are proud to produce a product that resonates with consumers who want both luxury and value,” Hammer added. “We have never compromised on quality, and it shows. Our bedding is no different than fine upholstered furniture, the best of which is all handmade.”
Shifman also attributes its success to its employees, many of whom live close enough to the Shifman facilities, situated at One Mott Street in Newark’s Ironbound District, to walk or bike to work. “The people employed at Shifman are one of the main reasons why we stayed put in Newark and significantly increased our investment here,” said Bill Hammer, Shifman’s president. “We would be hard pressed to find a more skilled and dedicated group of craftsmen anywhere else.”
Based in Newark, Shifman Mattress Company has been providing superior quality, handmade bedding for 115 years. In 1987, the company began its long-standing relationship with Bloomingdale’s to design and create luxury bedding lines sold exclusively at the upscale department store. Shifman’s natural cotton mattresses and hand-tied boxsprings, available also at fine furniture stores, can be found in distinguished homes around the world.
