Interior Designer Joan Kaufman, a member of the American Society of Interior Designers – Illinois Chapter (ASID-IL), was recently elected president-elect of the ASID-IL Chapter for the 2008-09 fiscal year, which began October 1, 2008. She will serve as president of the association for the fiscal year of 2009-10.
The ASID-IL Chapter is a non-profit professional association representing the interests of more than 1,600 Illinois interior designers, students and design industry partner members who practice a variety of design specialties. Its vision is to be the voice of design in Illinois and to provide information through quality, timely communications, to educate its members and clients, and to expand and to support market expansion. The Chapter is lead by a volunteer board that includes the Chapter's president, president-elect, 5 directors and a student representative. Kaufman has been an active member in the organization since 1988.
Kaufman, a resident of Naperville, Ill., is president of Interior Planning and Design, Inc., a full-service interior design firm she founded in 1990. The firm focuses in the creation of the total environment through space planning, interior design, lighting, color, finishes furniture and art.
In addition to her involvement with ASID, Kaufman is a professional member of IIDA and FSII, and has passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Exam. She also is a certified professional Feng Shui practitioner. Kaufman's client roster includes the Chicago Wolves Professional hockey team offices and practice facilities as well as many local businesses and homes in the area. Kaufman is a national award-winning designer and she is active in the promotion of the interior designer as an integral member of the professional design team.
Kaufman and her firm's work have been featured in several local and national media outlets, including cover shots and stories, from the Chicago Tribune, Interiors and Sources, Better Homes & Gardens, Window Fashions to West Suburban Living. Her work has been honored with several awards including the Halo/Metalux National Lighting Competition and a residential project featured in the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society House Walk.
Kaufman has a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Fine Art in Art History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She studied Art and Design at the Loyola University Rome Center in Rome, Italy, and has completed additional graduate coursework in the Architecture Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
