To mark the 100th Anniversary of the High Point Market this Spring, the High Point Market announced that it is turning to a pair of musical institutions for its popular Stars Under the Stars concert series and gala Centennial Celebration.
Blood Sweat & Tears will kick off the Centennial Celebration festivities Saturday night, April 25th under the Main Event Tent adjacent to the Transportation Terminal on Commerce Avenue. The band has left an indelible mark on the American music scene since its horn section exploded on the scene in New York’s Greenwich Village in the late ‘60s. Racking up sales in the millions with multiple gold albums and hits like “Spinning Wheel,” and “You Make So Very Happy,” the band was among the first to combine rock and jazz and over the years spawned an alumni roster that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the world’s greatest musicians.
On Sunday evening, legendary ‘70s R&B group The Spinners will take the stage armed with their dizzying playlist of hits, including “Rubberband Man,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl,” “Then Came You,” “Games People Play,” and “I’ll Be Around,” among many others. One of the few groups that can boast four lead singers, The Spinners have earned a dozen gold records and six Grammy nominations and still maintain a full touring schedule with their soul-infused, five-piece band.
Then, on Monday evening, prepare to experience Beatlemania as musical group 1964 brings the Beatles to life for Market-goers and new generations of screaming fans. Complete with Liverpudlian accents, this fab foursome is the closest thing possible to a live performance by John, Paul, George and Ringo, and so authentic that Gary Grimes, who plays Paul, even spent years learning to play the bass left-handed.
“The Stars Under the Stars events continue to be among the highlights of the guest experience here at Market,” says Brian D. Casey, president and chief executive officer of the High Point Market Authority. “Along with these crowd-pleasing entertainers, visitors will find a number of not-to-be-missed special events and surprises at Spring Market as part of the Centennial Celebration plans. I encourage everyone to register for updates on the highpointmarket.org website as they make their travel plans to ensure they are making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime event.”
