In my tip,
Easy Furniture Web Tip #260, I described how Google is now putting longer descriptions on search results pages and how you might be able to tap this feature.
When I wrote the original tip I mentioned that some experts thought Google would not pick up the longer descriptions from the description tag field, but from the page content. Thus they were not recommending writing longer tags or rewriting current tags.
I wondered if they were right.
So I tested a few pages on both my website and a client’s website. In both cases, once published, Google soon picked up the longer description tags.
Here’s how my new snippet looked on a Google search results page:
Google picked up exactly what I wrote in the description tag field.
Those extra two lines of description can add a lot of click-through motivation, not to mention selling power for your business. Don’t let that valuable real estate goe to waste.
Reminder: New description tags can be about 320 characters, including spaces; it used to be 150.
Easy Furniture Web Tip #262: Get more click-through and selling power on the Google search results page by writing longer description tags.
